Who we are
Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui is Wellington’s central library and a welcoming civic hub where locals and visitors come together to learn, create, and connect.
Its redesign is inspired by te taiao, reflecting the forest floor flora and fauna that once flourished for centuries along the waterfront.

Our name
Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui reflects the pursuit of knowledge through connection, curiosity, and engagement with the wider world. Rooted in te taiao, the brand honours the essence of a library while embracing the diverse functions within the space and our place in the environment.

The brand identity travels beyond the building, into homes, phones, posters, websites and all sorts of other things.
The design takes into consideration the depth of whakaaro that has been laid out, and ensure people experience this, whether they’re in the building or not.
